About Me

Hi and Welcome.

My name is Denise Rettie, and I am the owner of Therapeutic Techniques for Animals.

I think it goes without saying that I have always loved animals, and so about 6 years ago decided to start volunteering at a local shelter on my day off, working with the dogs in the pound, cleaning pens and feeding.

I was always attracted to those who were displaying signs of behavioural or emotional strain.  Those who were labelled “aggressive, timid, anxious, shut down, hyperactive, fearful.”  I would spend time sitting with one of these dogs gaining their trust, being as quiet and calm as possible, and then just started using my hands to massage.  I had no idea what I was doing, but saw the effect these calm strokes together with quiet energy and lots of patience had on the dogs.  I became fascinated and started reading all I could about massage, Tellington Touch, Reiki, acupressure and just about every other modality I could get my hands on.

When I then started working with the cats, although I had much less of an understanding of them than I did of dogs at that stage, I saw how some of these techniques worked just as well for them.

As I continued to explore, I soon learned about the many benefits derived from massage and other natural modalities, not just as a calming technique, but for so many physical conditions. I don’t know why I was surprised. After all, we humans have been having massages and using natural modalities for hundreds (if not thousands) of years. Why would it not have the same benefits for animals?

I was also interested in the amazing energetic transfer that happened whilst sitting in an almost meditative state with these precious animals. Animals are such naturally energetic beings and I have been so fortunate to have had many, many wonderful animal teachers.

So began my quest to find somewhere to study. I was fortunate to find a wonderful online group of mentors, mainly women, from all over the world, who were all in some way pioneers in the world of massage, acupressure, and other modalities with horses and then with small animals. I began some online short courses and then began to search in earnest for a school that would provide me with the very best training.

I  graduated from the NorthWest School of Animal Massage in Seattle, USA having completed both theoretical and practical studies. Studies include Anatomy, Physiology, Kinesiology, Gait Analysis, Advanced Massage Techniques and Animal Behaviour.

At the same time I studied and became certified in Animal Reiki. I have also studied some of the Tellington Touch methods.

I am committed to constantly upgrading my skills as an animal massage practitioner and learning new modalities to incorporate into my sessions. This ensures that each animal is treated according to their needs at that time, rather than a “one size fits all” approach.

Whether the issue is physical, emotional or behavioural, massage and similar modalities provide a holistic approach to animal care in conjunction with veterinary treatment.
